What a design system actually buys you

Monochrome gradient study

Most arguments for a design system talk about consistency. That is the least interesting part of it.

Consistency is a side effect

A system is not a rulebook that stops designers being inventive. It is a set of decisions made once, so that the hundredth screen costs a fraction of the first.

The real benefit is reversibility

When every colour is a token and every section is a component, changing your mind is a two-minute edit rather than a fortnight of find-and-replace. That is what lets a brand keep evolving after launch instead of freezing on the day it ships.

The test is simple: pick the most disruptive change you can imagine — a new accent colour, a tighter grid, rounder corners — and ask how many files it touches. If the answer is more than a handful, you have a style guide, not a system.
