Nine banner formats, one layout

Layout grid study

Display advertising is the strictest layout brief there is: same message, wildly different boxes, hard weight limits.

Start with the smallest

Design the 300×250 first. If the idea survives at that size it will expand comfortably; the reverse almost never works, and the leaderboard version ends up a different advert entirely.

Anchor, do not centre

Anchoring each element to an edge means one set of rules covers every format. Centring everything looks fine in two sizes and falls apart in the other seven.

Weight is a design constraint

A 150 KB limit is not the developer’s problem to solve at the end. It decides whether the background can be a photograph, and that decision belongs at the sketch stage.
